Cupping Massage

Restore Balance, Relieve Tension & Support Recovery

Cupping therapy here at Goodland Chiropractic in downtown Santa Barbara is a gentle, non-invasive modality designed to help relieve muscle tension, improve circulation, and support your body’s natural healing process.

Using targeted suction techniques, cupping works by lifting soft tissues to create space for increased blood flow, reduced restriction, and improved mobility. It is often used as part of a comprehensive care plan to support recovery, reduce stiffness, and promote relaxation.

Whether you’re dealing with chronic tightness, recovering from physical activity, or simply looking to enhance your overall wellness, cupping offers a restorative approach to help your body feel and function at its best.

What Is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping uses suction inside cups to gently lift the skin and underlying muscle away from the body. It creates a localized stretching sensation that can range from mild to more intense depending on the level of tissue restriction. This increased circulation brings blood flow to the surface of the skin and may leave temporary redness or circular marks. These are a normal and healthy response to treatment.

The lifting effect created by the cups can help mobilize restricted soft tissues, improve circulation, and support the body's natural processes for clearing metabolic waste and toxins from muscles and connective tissues.

While modern cups are typically made from medical-grade plastic, cupping has been used for thousands of years across many cultures, including with materials such as glass, bamboo, and animal horn. Historical records trace its use back to ancient Greek medicine, where it was applied for a variety of therapeutic purposes.

Today, cupping is commonly used in integrative and rehabilitative care settings to support soft tissue mobility, circulation, and recovery. Treatment may involve stationary placement or gentle movement techniques depending on individual needs.

Benefits of Cupping

Clients often incorporate cupping into their wellness routine for its supportive effects on both the body and nervous system. Reported benefits include:

  • Relief of muscle tension and tightness

  • Improved circulation and blood flow

  • Enhanced mobility and range of motion

  • Support for post-exercise or physical strain recovery

  • Reduced feelings of stiffness and restriction

  • Promotion of relaxation and nervous system downregulation

  • Support for overall musculoskeletal wellness

  • Helps release “stuck” or restricted muscle tissue and supports deeper tissue mobility

  • Supports the body's natural detoxification processes by encouraging circulation and the movement of metabolic waste products through muscles and connective tissues

Some patients notice immediate relief, while others experience gradual improvements over the following 24–48 hours.

Who Can Benefit from a cupping session?

Cupping therapy may be helpful for individuals experiencing:

  • Muscle tightness or chronic tension

  • Postural strain (neck, shoulders, back discomfort)

  • Recovery from exercise or physical activity

  • Limited mobility or stiffness

  • General stress and nervous system overload

  • Desire for enhanced recovery and relaxation support

Your practitioner will determine whether cupping is appropriate based on your individual needs and health history.

Cupping may be especially helpful if your muscles feel tight, restricted, or “stuck.” It can be a powerful standalone treatment or a great addition to a massage or chiropractic session for deeper tissue release and improved mobility.

Safety & Contraindications

Cupping therapy may not be appropriate in the following situations:

  • Open wounds, infections, rashes, sunburn, or compromised skin integrity

  • Recent or unhealed fractures, sprains, dislocations, or acute injuries

  • Acute inflammation, bursitis, hematomas, or post-surgical areas still healing

  • Hypermobile joints or acute disc herniations

  • Known or suspected blood clots (risk of embolism)

  • Known or suspected cancer

  • Anterior neck region (carotid artery, jugular vein, trachea)

  • Breasts, genitalia, pelvic floor, or sensory organs

  • Abdomen or low back during pregnancy

  • Within 48 hours after chemotherapy or 24 hours prior to treatment

  • Use under heat lamps or high external heat sources (burn risk)

All treatments are performed with clinical judgment and adjusted to ensure safety, comfort, and effectiveness.

What to expect in your cupping session

During your session, cups are placed on targeted areas of the body such as the back, shoulders, hips, or legs. The suction pulls the skin and underlying tissue upward, creating a strong localized stretch that can feel anywhere from gentle to quite deep depending on the level of tension in the area.

The treatment is typically well tolerated and often described as deeply relaxing. Circular marks may appear on the skin afterward—these are a normal response to increased circulation and typically fade within a few days to two weeks.

Cupping is often used alongside chiropractic care and other soft tissue therapies to enhance overall results.
